DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Veranda

The front veranda is called "mogappu" and evokes a sense of coming home for the owner. The pillars at the entrance are Chettinad pillars made of green granite, a unique choice since black granite is more common. The owner's father would sit on the veranda of her childhood home to greet the family.

Hall

The main gathering space is referred to as the hall, reflecting traditional Chettinad culture where the concept of a distinct living room does not exist. The walls displays works from the owner's architectural firm, where she has been a partner for 32 years, symbolizing her professional journey. The furniture is crafted from locally sourced recycled wood by Chettinad artisans, with some colonial-era pieces that reflect the business history of the Chetty community. The hall's marble flooring is a deliberate departure from traditional Chettinad homes, where marble is not typically used.

Courtyard

The courtyard, or "Naduvasal," features traditional black and white checked tiles, which the owner describes as an "organizing element". The tile colors in the house transition from cold to warm, beginning with the white, black, and white tones in the courtyard and becoming more intensely colored in the Athangudi tiles of the dining room. The courtyard pillars were sourced from local antique dealers and, contrary to their appearance, are not just decorative; they are load-bearing and support the concrete beams of the roof. Additionally, "thinnai" (raised platforms) on either side of the entrance are a tribute to the owner's childhood home, where her father would sleep on a similar platform.

Valavu

The "Valavu" is a secondary family room, a concept that bridges the traditional Chettinad spaces where ladies would gather with the modern idea of a family room. The furniture in this room is Western, deliberately chosen to blend Eastern and Western design aesthetics. The walls feature postcards of Chettinad mansions from a collection by Amar Ramesh. A small bicycle that belonged to the owner's husband, brought back from London by his father, is also a notable piece.

Hall 2

The artwork in this hall includes a framed photograph of a peacock embroidery on canvas. The actual piece, a Burmese work called Ratna Kambalam, is over 100 years old and is kept safely under lock and key. Another framed piece, a white crochet or embroidery, was a gift from the owner's late father, serving as a cherished memory and a way for them to feel his presence after their morning prayers. Echoing a traditional Chettinad feature, the colored glass windows in the hall refract light, casting colored shadows on the white floors below.

Muthu Room

The Muthu (Pearl) room is a peaceful space bathed in natural light, where the framed British greeting and invitation cards from the owner's grandfather's collection are like a string of pearls, each one a precious, individual memory. The locally crafted furniture and tranquil ambiance make it a serene retreat, with no television or other distractions.

Rathnam Room

The Rathnam (Gemstone) room is a serene space featuring two single beds. The large windows offer a pleasant view of the garden, which is filled with vibrant flowers. In the warmth of the sunlight, the room sparkles, living up to its name.

Dining Room

This room features two dining tables. On the walls, framed embroidered bags with dog patterns are displayed. These were once "tambulam" bags, used to give gifts to guests before they left the house, and were embroidered by the owner's family. The dog motif is significant because the dog is the "vaganam" (vehicle) of Vyra, the main deity of the temple community to which her husband's family belongs. Opposite to the dogs, old wooden cooking utensils are hung on the walls. The floor has traditional, commonly seen Atangudi tiles.

Garden

The garden is the work of the owner's husband, who is a passionate gardener. The garden, which is west-facing, offers a great view of the sunset in the evenings.
