DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Entrance Pathway

A verdant carpet of lush green plants lines the entrance pathway, leading to a traditional Tulsi Vrindavan (Tulsi plant) at its heart. Framed by two yellow pillars, the path welcomes you to Nilayam, where the swimming pool sits to the right and car park to the left.

Veranda

In the olden days, this was a traditional patio where people would gather to enjoy the cool evening breeze and read the morning newspaper. It is still adorned with original furniture from the old house, including rustic chairs that were specially designed for the owner’s grandmother to ensure her comfort. Its unique mosaic pillars, installed by the owner's Art Deco-loving father, replaced the original marble ones. Despite clashing with the house's traditional style, architects advised keeping them due to their irreplaceable craftsmanship.

Lobby

Welcome to the heart of the home, a lobby filled with treasured memories. A beautifully preserved swing from the old house is a central feature. The space is adorned with framed family wedding photos and a grand "Srinivasa Kalyanam" painting by a local temple artist. Unique decor includes an old veena repurposed as a lamp base and a vintage clock face serving as a tabletop. A traditional 'Kannadi cupboard' (glass niche) displays a cherished collection of ancestral brass idols. This room serves as a comfortable waiting area for guests, offering a glimpse into the home's rich heritage.

Living Room

This is a truly spacious haven where the homeowner used to spend their summer nights with cousins. A welcoming, life-size sleeping Vinayagar greets you at the entrance, a grand chandelier hangs overhead. Two tables, creatively repurposed with a Kannadi cupboard as one of the legs, add to the room’s unique charm, and a huge painting of the owner's grandparents seems to watch over the beloved home. The exquisite Tanjore art panel, with its rich colors and intricate gold leaf work depicting deities, further enhances the traditional elegance of the room.

Dining Room

As a dining area for guests to enjoy lunch and dinner, this room showcases a cherished collection of Dasara dolls belonging to the owner's grandmother. The collection includes terracotta dolls of gods like Vishnu and freedom fighters such as Nehru and Gandhi. These dolls are not of the moulded variety and cannot be found today, making them particularly unique. The artifacts reflect the house's history from the pre-independence era and collectively tell the story of the home and its family.

Library

This literary sanctuary serves as a comfortable space for guests. It houses a collection of old published books covering a range of topics from philosophy and poetry to fiction, which guests are welcome to enjoy. The room also features a collection of old records. A prized peacock carpet, which the owner states is over 100 years old, is a centerpiece of the space. The weaving is so durable it has proven its resilience over time. According to the owners, the peacock carpet was made in Karaikudi and was a very popular design.

Informal Dining Room

This cozy, non-air-conditioned space is bathed in good sunlight in the mornings, making it an ideal spot for guests to enjoy their breakfast. The room is home to an Annapurna, the goddess of food and nourishment, which the owner's beloved grandmother used to adorn with jewellery. This figure holds a special significance as a beautiful tribute to the family's past restaurant business. As a further nod to this history, pieces of old utensils are displayed on the walls. A huge Vinayagar (Lord Ganesh) painting hangs on the wall, adding a spiritual and artistic touch to the space.

Swimming Pool

The swimming pool is a stunning feature, located in a covered space with a high roof and large arches. It features a vibrant, life-size painting of Matsya Avatara of Visnu in a traditional Indian style The deck area is furnished with chairs, and a Nandi sculpture rests at the pool's edge. The pool area also holds a charming nod to the past, with old "kadais" (woks) from the family's restaurant business repurposed as towel baskets.

Govinda Suite

A peaceful retreat, the Govinda Suite was once the owners’ grandfather's study. The room has paintings of Kali adorned on a wall. It features a lounge space with a TV and seating, and a bedroom tucked away inside. The room soaks in sunlight during sunset, and the bathroom walls have a warm and bright yellow oxidized finish, creating a cozy atmosphere.

Umayal Suite

This serene sanctuary is a spacious retreat. As you enter, the room opens to a bedroom with a TV. Further inside, you have a huge dressing room and an attached bathroom with yellow oxidized walls. The room is adorned with beautiful Tanjore paintings and decorated with a tranquil green colour palette.

Kittu Suite

The Kittu Suite is a vibrant space with a striking red colour palette. It features a dressing area with a life-size mirror bordered by an old wedding saree. The room is also decorated with framed vintage calendar prints of gods and goddesses. Beautiful repurposed horse toys from Mysore serve as lamp bases in the bedroom, while the bathroom offers a contrasting green oxidized wall.

Rajanya Suite

This room boasts a majestic four-poster bed and is filled with framed prints of old gods and goddesses. A beautiful mirror from an old wardrobe is repurposed for the dressing space. As sunlight streams in, the room takes on a special glow, particularly during sunset. The attached bathroom has green oxidized walls.

Athma Suite

A peaceful and sun-kissed haven, the Athma Suite opens to a charming, old open desk that belonged to the owner’s uncle, a lounge space, and then the bedroom inside. The beautiful bedroom is filled with abundant morning sunlight, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The room is filled with Buddha-themed decor, from the Buddha mirror to the paintings. In a clever design choice, the yellow oxidized walls of the bathroom echo the golden hue of the sunlight that fills the bedroom.

Padma Suite

The master bedroom is a luxurious sanctuary with a very spacious living area. The room has a warm, golden glow with its dominant yellow colour, which is reflected in the yellow-tiled floor. A contrasting green carpet and sofa seats complement the space. This room also features a huge vanity mirror with beautiful ceramic handles and the largest bathroom in the entire house, featuring a rustic peach oxidised wall. An interesting piece in the room is an old, unopenable locker, adding a layer of mystery to the home's history.
