Mahabalipuram is a few hours drive from Chennai down the East Coast Road (ECR), running along the Coromandel coast of the Bay of Bengal. The best way to reach is to take a flight to Chennai and drive down the ECR. Cabs are available on hire. From cities in the south of Tamil Nadu too, Pondicherry is best accessed by well-laid out roads.

Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram (also called Mamallapuram) is an ancient port town and is home to a plethora of must-visit UNESCO world heritage sites, a collection of 40 ancient monuments including one of the world’s largest open-air bas-reliefs, the five Rathas, and the Seven Pagodas that retell the valiant stories of the thriving Pallava kings 1300 years ago. You can trek up the Thirukazhukundram hillock for a quick prayer and soak in the scenic views from atop the hill! 

Beat the heat with watersports on the azure coastal waters with stand-up paddling, kayaking, windsurfing and kitesurfing along the jubilant east coastline.
